Last weekend, I was playing harp at a very special wedding at Brooklodge, Wicklow.
The couple lives in Seattle, U.S.A and returned to the bride’s home-place in Co. Wicklow for their Irish celebration, then later they plan to visit the groom’s home-place for their Indian celebration.
This was an intimate, deeply personal setting—family and friends gathered closely, and every note carried emotional and cultural significance.
Performing for weddings is a very different challenge from public gigs: here, the music tells a story, connects generations, and honours traditions.
Confidence comes from preparation—choosing songs that reflect the couple’s journey, rehearsing transitions, and imagining how each moment will feel.
It’s not just about playing beautifully; it’s about creating moments that resonate emotionally and culturally.
I focus on presence, subtle adjustments, and listening deeply to the energy in the room.
A pause in the right place, a soft dynamic shift, or connecting visually with the couple can make the performance unforgettable.
Intimacy amplifies both nerves and impact—but when you prioritize connection and meaning over perfection, music becomes a shared experience rather than just a performance.
